Introduction: On 30 January 2000, a deadly cocktail of cyanide and heavy metals, some 100,000 cubic meters in all, leaked from the Sasar waste pond near Baia Mare, Northern Romania, into a nearby creek. The poisonous liquid then ran into the Szamos, a tributary of the Tisza River, and then reached the Tisza on 4 February.
